Decorating

So as I sit here, I'm about to take a final exam (in 15 minutes) I've been browsing Pinterest like I usually do for about 4 hours now (not exaggerating).  I really want to update our apartment but I don't want to update things that won't be investments for us in the future. I have also been hesitant because I don't want to start some huge project while I am in the middle of school and work.  So now that the break is coming up, I'm considering painting the bedroom furniture. I used some terrible photoshop tools to give myself an idea of what the bedroom would look like after I paint it. I'm thinking black... I think it would look a million bucks better if the bedroom furniture was black.. I'm just worried about the effort involved here.

Bedroom Now.

So what do you think? Should I do it?

Is it Christmas Yet??

Ok, call me lame. But I LOVE my Christmas Tree! I know I've bragged about it before... but seriously folks. I got it for $10 bucks. And look how stinkin' cute it is! I liked the look of the white but I was worried about it being too modern and not Christmassy enough... but I think it's perfect!  And look at all those pretty wrapped presents sitting under the tree..... Maybe I'll just have a peak...

Working out and Insanity

So Devin and I have always really been into working out and being fit. However when I had knee surgery this summer I couldn't do much, in fact I wasn't even cleared to ride a bike until October.... so as you can imagine.... after 4 months of doing nothing I was super out of shape. And I definitely gained some weight, and lost muscle mass. So I was just a mess.

And trying to get back in shape was even harder. I've worked out my entire life and always felt "fit" and strong. So starting from scratch was really hard and something I wasn't used to. Anyway.... Devin and I decided to make some fitness goals. He hates running and I love it. But I have a hard time doing it on my own. So we tried to figure out a compromise.... Last Monday (December 2) we started a fitness plan.

Our goals:
Me to get back to my normal weight (125) by the end of March
Him: To gain muscle mass & weight (170) by the end of March

Reward:
Trip to Vegas and spending money!

The first week I went running and he went to the gym. Devin's brother-in-law sent us Insanity and we got it over the weekend, so we just started it this Monday. I thought I would be able to do Insanity and run... but this thing has kicked our butts. There is no way I could go jog for even 10 minutes after these workouts. I can't even tell you how hard it is! I went to bed last night with my leg throbbing because it was so sore. And this morning I could hardly get out of bed. And by the end of the 40 minute workout yesterday, both Devin and I collapsed on the floor sweating and breathing hard. And fell asleep. Take a look at the picture above that Dev snapped just before we conked out.

But... (drumroll please) I've already lost 9 lbs! Ok a lot of that was probably water weight because I've been drinking and eating a lot healthier now, but I still feel awesome! And I heard that Insanity burns anywhere from 400-900 calories a workout. That's seriously insane. I'll keep you updated on how Insanity goes.....

For now, you can enjoy this silly video of me trying to get Devin to stand up when he's super weak.

12 Days of Christmas Letters

It's December! My favorite month of the year. And this year I'm psyched because it will be the first Christmas I get to spend with Devin. Last year, he was out of town and then came back on the 28th and surprised me by proposing. So, it was still a fantastic month, but I'm excited to have him for actual Christmas this year. Because we are both in college, we are pinching our pennies. I have saved up quite a bit to get him some pretty awesome gifts, but I wanted to do something extra special too!

This year I'm showering him with something cute but frugal:
"The 12 Days of Christmas Letters!"

What are these you might ask? Well, I've written small little letters about special moments in our life together. To give you a few ideas so you can make your own, I've included the letters I'm going to give him this year.

First day we met (1)
You would think I would remember this like it was yesterday, but I'm sure my awkwardness blocked the painful memory for me. I believe it was either during our ward's "Break the Fast" (and you were holding a snowman mug which I awkwardly commented on) or it was during the Mix n’ Mingle event at our apartment (which wasn't any less awkward because I was probably wiping up drool in between long stares at you) . I remember you invited me up to your apartment during the Mix n’ Mingle to watch a movie with your friends. Erica and I came up near the end and watched part of the movie you guys had on. Then Erica and I left early because it was a total action movie and they freak her out. And like that wasn't awkward. So let’s do it over? And I guess we can be awkward if you really want to.  Let’s celebrate tonight with hot chocolate (in snowman mugs) and a movie!  Love you!

Hustling me (2 games of basketball)
Well this one is just embarrassing. Do I need to say more? All I remember is being so psyched that I was beating you at basketball and then feeling bittersweet that I now had to take you out on our first date. Well it turned out really great, so I guess I can’t complain too much Anyway, let’s celebrate tonight with a game of basketball (real or on the xbox!)

We kissed! (3 times that night to be exact)
This is absolutely one of my favorite memories of us. I liked you so much, and you made me wait so long! But it was so perfect because of that! It’s the only kiss I can remember feeling fireworks during (I know that sounds cheesy but I don’t know how else to describe it). I think after that moment, I sort of knew that we were going to be together for a long time, or that we were supposed to be. And that was the other awesome part. We kissed for the first time after we decided to date exclusively. I knew you liked me for me.  I can’t wait to tell this story to our kids when they are getting ready to date. What a cool example of saving your kisses for the one you love!  Let’s celebrate tonight with lots of kisses (and of course Hershey's kind too!)

New York (4 days long!)
Talk about sweeping a girl off her feet! This was such a cool experience. Absolutely one of my top 10 memories of us. I still remember sitting at Texas Road House (my favorite restaurant) and you pulling out the tickets to see Stomp. I thought that was so cool, and then I found out that the tickets were for a show in New York! I freaked. I’m so glad we got the chance to walk our little feets off all over that city together.  Central Park, Times Square, Indian Food, etc I will always have a special place in my heart for New York because of that trip. Let’s celebrate tonight by eating some good ol’ fashion New York hot dogs. :)

First time I said “I love you” (at 5am)
I remember this night like it was yesterday. We went semi-skinny dipping in Utah lake super late at night during late fall/winter.  (I know you checked me out!) Afterwards, we almost died of hypothermia as we sat soaking wet in your car wrapped in blankets with the heater turned up to high. I remember we didn’t want to go inside because we were so cold, so we just kept talking. I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I blurted out "I think I love you." Then I semi-yelled/chocked it out again. I was so embarrassed because I had never told anyone that before, let alone been the first to say it! But you made me feel great. We laughed and talked and you told me you loved me too. I was in heaven. Let’s celebrate by thinking of all the reasons we love each other!

First Date  (6 activities:  brick oven pizza, hay ride, big slide thing, make-out maze, pumpkin patch, carving pumpkin)

This was so fun. My favorite part was when you tackled me in the maze and then we made out. I still remember being peeved that I was the one that had to take you out, but it was ok, because I liked you so much! I also remember being really nervous you would think the date was cheesy or dumb, but then I found out that you worshipped pizza and I knew the date was a homerun! Let’s celebrate tonight by eating some yummy pizza!

When you proposed (It was supposed to be 7pm J)
Remember this night? I sure do. December 28th! What a surprise. I was so bummed to miss our first Christmas together, but what a surprise I got when you came home early and whipped out a bright shiny ring and asked me to be with you forever!  That was probably the best day of my life until our wedding! Remember how you also gave me that sparkly gold necklace for my Christmas present, ON TOP of my engagement ring? That was awesome, and I love you for being so giving and cute and sneaky. Remember how we also went to the melting pot afterwards?? Let’s celebrate by going back to where you popped the question - Temple Square!

The months we’ve been married now (8)
Can you believe it? I seriously don’t know where the time went. It seems like it was yesterday that we were just hanging out. Now we’re all married and serious n’ stuff. And I love it. These have been the best 8 months of my entire life. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. Thanks for making me the happiest me I could be. Let’s celebrate tonight by laughing and being happy (whether that be youtube videos, tickle fights (yes I said tickling), or knock-knock jokes. Let’s  laugh out loud tonight.

The months we’ve had our first apartment together (9 months)
Ok,  I know I’m kind of pushing it on this one but we did get our apartment in early April and it is now late December, so it’s almost 9 months! But seriously, I think we forget about how freaking awesome our apartment is and how many fantastic memories we’ve had in it. Let’s celebrate our first place together by making a list of all the awesome things we’ve done in it, and doing something awesome in it too! (pillow fort?)

Our Honeymoon (10 days long)
By far this is my favorite vacation I’ve ever had before! We went to so many cool places and saw so many cool things! Nassau was so fun, as well as swimming with the dolphins. The sting ray experience was really cool too. I loved finding those huge seashells and making you carry them for miles hehe.  Dinner was fun too! Dressing up and gaining weight. Now those are the times to remember I think my favorite part was being on the beach in a romantic wonderland with my bestfriend.  Let’s celebrate tonight with some romance!

Our wedding day (sealed at 11:00 am)
My favorite day with my favorite person in the world.  I couldn’t believe it was actually happening and that I could be with you forever after that day. Words can’t describe how I feel about our wedding.  It was an amazing day with so many memories, family, and friends, but the only part I really really cherish was being with you and celebrating it! Let’s celebrate tonight by watching our wedding video again.

The year we met (2012)
2012 had so many great things to it!  It was my second year of college, I was rooming with my best friends, I felt so content with where I was in life. The best part, though, was meeting you. Who knew that I would meet my soul mate that year Who knew that we would get engaged that year Who knew that we would go to California and get soaked by Shamu, attacked by flamingos, watch the sunsets together, and fall in love on the beach . Who knew I love the year 2012. Probably my favorite year besides this one (is that weird to have favorite years?).  Let’s celebrate last year by thinking of all the great things we did together and all of the awesome things we want to do together this next upcoming year. I love you so much babe! Merry Christmas!

Colorado Thanksgiving

Sorry about not posting in a while! The hubby and I took a trip out to Colorado to see his family, and boy oh boy... we had the best time ever! I didn't realize how lucky I was when I was marrying Devin... I get this amazing husband and another amazing family to go along with it. I'm truly blessed.

Everyone that was there: Grandma and Grandpa, Aunt Chrissy, Momma Char, Christian, and of course Greg and Chantelle. They were the best hosts! They have a beautiful house and really seem to be loving their new home in Colorado. PLUS, they have the cutest dogs ever. I mean, I seriously fell in love with this breed. I thought I wanted a German Shepherd or a Husky, even a Lab, but after hanging out with these guys the whole weekend, I'm converted!

Anyway, here's some pictures that describe the weekend better than I can in words.

This was taken while driving to Colorodo. Needless to say, it was a scary drive!

Hanging out at the Denver Nuggets v Dallas Mavericks game with the WHOLE fam!

We might have been in the nose bleeds..... :)

Greg and Chantelle holding Brody and Luna. Also, look at the gorgeous Thanksgiving table settting!

Luna passed out :)

The best dogs ever.

Priceless.

Sweet Dreams

Devin and I have an interesting relationship with sleep. Because Devin works so hard everyday with school and his company, the second he hits our mattress he is out cold. (Sometime even the couch!). This leaves me, a hyperactive, insomniac wife that hasn't seen her husband all day to dwindle her thumbs and entertain herself until she can fall asleep, while she sits next to her passed out (and sometimes snoring) hubby.

Things I've been doing to pass the time until I can fall asleep:

1- I just started Gossip Girl, season 1 episode 1 on Netflix. I'm already addicted all over again.

2 - Eat ice cream. Straight out of the tub. In bed. It's a bad habit I'm slowly working on...

3 - Do homework / study. This one is not my favorite.

4 - Read. My cute sister-in-law got me some new books for my birthday so I've been consuming them like I consume pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving... It's not a pretty scene.

5 - Listen to Devin sleep talk. This one is the best. Randomly he will roll over and yell or mumble something. Last night I believe he was dreaming about our kids (or some random kids?). He kept saying how hard it was to raise our daughter. We actually had a semi conversation while he was sleeping. Maybe a little creepy.. .but kind of cute at the same time. He was talking about how he loved his daughter but it was so hard to raise her. Hope that's not a future prophecy!

So then I was interested in what our future kids would look like. So I started morphing our faces.

Here were the first two results:

That's a large forehead...

Well, he has his daddy's ears! We are gonna have some interesting kids... Ha...

After I was dissapointed, I tried another website for morphing faces. Yeah.....

Look at that UNIBROW! Wow. The saddest part is I can't tell if it's a girl or a boy!

Anyway, thanks for amusing me... Until next time!

Birthday Wishes

Wow, can I just say.. I have amazing family and friends!? This birthday was so awesome! I turned 21. Which is crazy. I feel like I should feel a lot older than I feel. (Say that 10 times fast!) But then I look around and realize that I am working, going to school, I'm married, we have two cars, and are saving for a house. So I am oldish. I guess.

So for my birthday, Devin woke me up at the crack of dawn to take me to breakfast at Kneaders where he had my girlfriends waiting to surprise me. It was great! I took the day of from work and school so I went home and took a nap while Dev gave me a great massage! Afterwards Devin left for work and I headed to Draper to hang out with my mom. We got mani's and then we went to dinner with my Grandma and Aunt.  It was so fun! When I got home Dev had just gotten off work and surprised me with a giant cupcake that looked like a porcupine because he had stabbed it with 21 candles. It was adorable! ( I wish I had a picture but the wax was melting so fast I had to blow it out quickly). Other than that, I got to talk to my amazing family and friends which was awesome! I am so blessed!

Plus, look at some of the goodies I got! I don't know what I love more, they're all so great!

Feeling blessed...

Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree....

So this weekend I went to our neighborhood thrift store looking for some cute Christmas decor I could refurbish when I found this fantastic tree. For only $10 bucks. Score! Then I couldn't help myself. I was already in the Christmas spirit so I put it up and then swiftly found some gold and silver ornaments to bedazzle it with. I love the look of the white and gold against the light blue wall. What do you think?

I think it's the perfect size for our apartment and the perfect tree for our first Christmas!

Our Newest Addition.

I have been dying to get a puppy. Specifically an English Cream Golden Retriever, or a German Shepherd, or a Siberian Husky. I would die for any of these right now. And Devin knows it.  But we can't get a puppy. At least until we can settle down in one place. I don't want to have to worry about finding a place that allows dogs if we decide to move in the next few years. So... until then, meet Lupe. Our fish.

I may or may not have gone out and bought a fish for my birthday. A girl's gotta have some kind of a pet right? Ok well here he is! He is a beautiful blue color that  I fell in love with! Welcome home Lupe :)

Ok, but tell me these dogs aren't to die for... right?

DIY Beach Christmas Ornaments

I know it's still a little early for Christmas, but I couldn't stand walking past these ornaments. I am weirdly sentimental and like to keep things from important times in my life. Well, that means whenever I go on vacation I just have to keep some sand. So, naturally when Devin and I went to San Diego, CA  with my family for vacation and the Bahamas for our Honeymoon, I kept buckets full of sand from them.  So, when I saw these in the store, I instantly knew what I'd do with them.  (Plus, I could make something more practical and still sentimental, while clearing some space out of my closet for the unused sand!)

I purchased a few of these, they were only 88 cents each.

Next, I filled 'em up with sand! Then I used a black sharpie to write sentimental details on each one about the place, time, and occasion.  I also put some fun little seashells and parts of a sand dollar in them that we found on the beach. (Sorry, you can't see those in these pictures) I'm so excited to have these forever and can't wait to make more for our next adventures!

**Update: I showed Devin the cute ornaments and he loved them. I'm not sure what he loved more actually... the ornaments or the sand I'm going to get rid of... either way it is a win-win!

Happy Halloween

Devin wasn't very excited for Halloween until he realized he could dress up as a black rapper. Then he was psyched. Maddie and I were gold diggers, Devin was a rich black rapper - 2 Chainz, and Mike was Carlton. It was hilarious.

So here are our pictures from Halloween! Mike, Maddie, and Devin and I went to a Halloween festival earlier in the night.  We went through the haunted house and I just about died. I was in heels about 4 inches high and I was running through it trying not to get stampeeded by Devin. He's a little shy around scary things.... Anyways I was crying by the time we finished.

Afterwards we met up at Mike and Maddie's for a party.  We had invited over 5 other couples and they all brought yummy food. We ended up watching "The Woman in Black" and I almost cried again. Their puppy Mia cuddled with me though so it was ok. Anyway check out our pictures and this great video of Devin dancing. Hahah.

Devin, I, Maddie, Mike

Such a pimp.

But I get the money... so who cares right?

It was also Maddie's birthday the next day, so we lit a cupcake for her and sang her happy birthday!

Check out these adorable apple faces I made for our cider. So easy!

And finally, the beloved video. So great.

Shrunken Heads in Apple Cider

As I was browsing through Pinterest trying to find something fun to do for our Halloween party this year, I spotted Martha Stewart's link to "shrunken heads" in apple cider. They looked so cute so I gave it a try. I ended up amending the original recipe that Martha Stewart gives here, but I think it is easier to do it my way, and it turned out great!

***WARNING: This recipe does not tell you how to make cider, only the shrunken heads :)

Makes 4 heads.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 medium sized apples
  • 1 bottle of lemon juice (6.7 oz)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Cider
  • Non-stick cooking spray

DIRECTIONS FOR HEADS
  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
  • In a medium sized bowl mix one bottle of lemon juice with water and salt. Set aside.

  • Peel your apples.
  • Slice them in half down through the core.
  • Brush away any seeds
  • Using a sharp paring knife, carve faces into the round side of the apples. Deeper is better.
  • Dip the apples into the lemon juice mixture immediately after carving their faces.
  • Let soak for 30 seconds each and then place on a paper towel.

  • Spray your baking sheet with non-stick spray and place the apple's face up on the tray.
  •  Let them bake for about 90 minutes or until golden/brown.
  • Take out from the oven and let cool.  They may still be soggy but this will be fine.
  • Heat up your apple cider (bought mine in a jug) and plop the apple heads in!

  • Enjoy as your guests are creeped out and fascinated at the same time.
  • Receive multiple pats on the back for a job well done!

Grad School

As I write this, I'm avoiding finishing a heavy research paper that is due tomorrow.  In order to perpetuate my disdain for school right, here are some great links to why BYU is so freakin hard... why I thought I should go to Grad School -and now don't- and why there are no jobs for Humanites PhD's!

Anyway, they're a good laugh. Check em out.

Easy Crock Pot Chicken Gravy and Rice

Good Morning! Here's a little recipe I tried yesterday for Sunday dinner. I wanted something quick and easy because I had a lot to do and needed to maximize my time.  It doesn't get much easier than this!

And first of all, can I say how hard it is to get an appetizing picture of a crock pot meal?? Really hard! But here ya go. Let's just say it tastes way better than it looks.

Makes 4 servings.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2-3 chicken breasts
  • 1 can cream of chicken or mushroom (depends on what you prefer)
  • 1 envelope chicken gravy mix
  • Rice

DIRECTIONS:
  • For easy cleaning, spray your crock pot with Pam
  • Layer the bottom of your 4.5 quart crock pot with chicken breasts
  • Sprinkle Gravy mix onto chicken
  • Spoon out 1 can cream of chicken or mushroom on top of chicken.
  • Cook on low for 4-6 hours.
  • Shred chicken with forks and mix sauce and gravy mix together.
  • Serve over steamed rice!

I used this rice and it was amazing! Look for "Calrose Rice" or white rice with medium grain. This creates a stickier more restaurant like rice.

Grammy's Birthday

This weekend we celebrated my Grandma's 71st birthday up at Snowbird! It was beautiful up there! The first night we went to dinner at the Steak Pit, went hot-tubbing, and then fell asleep watching a movie. I have to say it was hilarious sleeping over with my Mom, Grandma, and Aunt Leslie all in the same room. But it was fun! Here are a few pics.

New Car!

I don't know how we bought two cars in one month, but we did! We swapped out my Mazda and Devin's Honda to get our Nissan Xterra and this Hyundai Elantra. I guess we just love change?  We bought them from Devin's buddy Jason at Action Auto.  They were fabulous. They got us great deals at great prices and were willing to work with us on anything and everything. Definitely check them out.

Anyway, check out my cute new car! It comes with leather, heated seats, a beautiful sound system and much more!

Halloween DIY Decor

Sorry it's been a while since my last post! Life just gets so busy.. Anyway, I wanted to share with you some of the cute DIY Halloween decor I made for our cute house! So simple and so easy. Check out the pictures and share if you love them!

This was so easy to make and only $5!

I bought this wreath from Walmart for about $2.00
I bought some chevron printed burlap fabric from Walmart for about $2.00.
I bought this orange ribbon from Walmart for $1.00

I used scissors and safety pins lying around the house to cut the fabric and pin it tightly around the wreath. Then I tied a big bow around the wreath. I cut more strips of the ribbon and tied those on as well for extra volume!

This table cloth was ridiculously easy.

I used the leftover burlap fabric from the wreath I made above, and cut a square out. I threw it under a bowl of small pumpkins and voila! Instant fall centerpiece.

I just had to show off my chevron pumpkin. It doesn't look that cute in this picture because I used glitter paint that is somewhat translucent. Up close and in real life, it's adorable!

I took painters tape and taped around the pumpkin in a zig zag shape on two rows.  Then I painted it! I let it dry and peeled off the tape to reveal this fun pattern.

English Observation

In my class for English Teaching Observation, I have been going to Maple Mountain High School everyday. Today I walked into class and one of the students said

"Good morning my resplendent flapdoodle"
To which I responded, "Uh yeah"

I then looked up the phrase because I literally had no idea what it meant, or if the words even existed. To my surprise they did.

Resplendent: "attractive and impressive through being richly colorful or sumptuous"
Flapdoodle:  "a fool"

I had no idea if this was considered sexual harassment or if he was just trying to show off because we have been learning new words... I'm leaning towards the second. Well played 1st period English class high school boy... well played...

Birthday Pillows

My Mother-in-law's birthday is coming up! Her birthday is Monday, September 23rd.  As Devin and I are poor starving college students, we decided to be a little thrifty with gifts this year.  At first I was disappointed. There is nothing I love more than to give great gifts to great people! But, after some quality ruminating, I decided to make something - pillows for her piano studio chairs!

This is her studio and the two chairs to the left need a little pillow lovin' don't you think?

And here are the amazingly simple pillows I made! Ok, maybe they weren't that easy to make because I hand-stitched them (college girl problems - no sewing machine). But the fact that they are hand sewn makes them that much more lovable right? :)

Click here for the easy video I used make them!
