Long Story....
Devin and I first met on Friday, August 24th, 2012.
We both lived in
an apartment building that housed single college students. Our building was
buzzing with energy as everyone had just moved in that weekend to start Fall
semester. People were trying to get a feel for who everyone was and what their
neighbors for the next 8 months would be like. Our building hosted a social
meet n greet that night and our apartment had graciously offered to have
everyone over afterwards for treats and drinks... and duh, to meet the
cuties....!
What a great
night! I talked to a ton of cool people and had a lot of fun! In fact, I was in
deep conversation with a guy I had just met when someone caught my eye.
You know that
awkward eye dance you play with someone across the room when you think they're
cute? You are both looking at each other, but trying not to get caught... Well
that about sums up 60 straight minutes of that night.
Then something
amazing happened. He made solid eye contact with me, waved, and invited (yelled
across the room?) me up to his apartment to watch a movie with some friends. I
went up a little later, and walked in. I
watched a little bit, chatted a little, and then left after the movie got
really intense. I'm not that into action/blood/fighting......
Sunday,
September 2nd
Well, the week
went on without any more of hottie mystery boy. At this point, I still had no
idea what his name was... But
I did know where he lived. Awesome.. Well, our building had another social
activity that weekend. I spotted him instantly again. What the heck? I felt
like an awkward stalker. Anyway I was determined to talk to him for at least a
second. As I was leaving I made some brillian comment to him about the snowman
mug he was holding in his hand. Great job. Great. He'll probably associate you
with fat snowmen now.
Sometime the
Next Week (Wednesday?)
Our building had another social
activity. Can you tell they liked them? Well, this activity was inspired by the
movie Cowboys and Aliens. Ha. Surprisingly it was a great night! There was
food, games, music, and lots of socializing! I stayed for the movie at the end
and was helping put away chairs when hottie mystery boy came over to help us.
We started actually talking and having a real conversation. It drifted to
running and how Devin (I had now learned his name) wanted to run more. I told
him we could run together in the morning if he wanted to get my number. (I
know, I'm so sneaky!) Well,
we set it up to run the next day.
The Following
Day (Thursday)
Waking up wasn't
as hard as usual. Weird - because it was the freakin' crack of dawn. But I
was excited. I sent Devin a text asking if he was ready to run. I didn't get a response. After
about 10 minutes I was about to head out on my own when he called me and said
he was "soooo sorry" but he had slept in and wanted to go the next
day. At that point I was skeptical. Real promising...
It's Friday,
Friday, Gotta get down on Friday!
We went running.
Really! With another guy. Devin + Me + Sean. Sean had gotten my
number and wanted to go running too. Why not? Devin seemed a little flakey
anyways. :) We chatted while jogging, and then I really started to like Devin.
He was funny. Not just funny, as in he tells good jokes. He was funny, as in
"Hey girl, I get you. Now I'm gonna make you laugh till you pee."
Sometime the
Next Week Again (It was all a blur)
Devin had texted
me a few times. He asked what I was doing that weekend and sadly I had plans
Friday and Saturday. I saw him on Sunday and we chatted for a few minutes but
that was all. I didn't hear from him until Wednesday. He texted me asking if I
wanted to play basketball with him. I was soooo down.
Wednesday....
He hustled
me.
Literally. Not
even kidding. (But in a good way.. kind of) We started by playing Horse
and bet that the loser had to buy the winner ice cream. I totally won. Then
Devin upped the stakes. He bet that the loser had to take the winner out on a
date. Guess who won... err.. creamed the other person.... err... that time? So
I took him out on our first date!
1st date
(two days later)
We went to
Brick Oven Pizza for dinner and then headed to a pumpkin patch to pick out a
pumpkin! I made him carry the biggest one we could find! We took a hay ride,
went down a huge slide on hay sacks, and even stumbled our way out of a maze!
We took the pumpkin back to my apartment and carved it! Boy did it smelll....
Sometime
days later....
We had been
seeing each other every day after that first date. I was intoxicated. We were
making up silly excuses to hang out or sit by each other in church. We couldn't
get enough of each other! It had been over a week and he still hadn't kissed me
though! What the heck. We threw a little party at our apartment later that week
and of course Devin was there. Afterwards, we went on a walk to cool down outside
(it gets pretty hot when you cram 30 people in to 20 sq ft of an apartment). We
sat down on a rock and ended up talking about how we only wanted to date each
other. Then he kissed me.
It was
magical. And perfect. There were fireworks :)
A gazillion
days later.... HE PROPOSED
Devin and I
were serious, and we both knew we wanted to marry each other, but I had no clue
when he would pop the question. Over Christmas break he flew home to Arizona to
see his family and go on a family reunion cruise. He told me he would be home
on Saturday. I was counting down the days! At the time, my best friend Whitney
was planning to leave on a mission and told me she wanted to get some pictures
with her best friends at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. and see a production
going on that night She told me to look realllllly cute and we met half way to
head down town. We were walking around outside freezing our bums off. I was
getting really impatient and wanted to go inside when Devin called me. For some
reason he asked me 5 times, "How are you?" After I was thoroughly
confused he said "turn around." He was down on one knee, had the
biggest smile on his face, tears were brimming up, and he was holding the
prettiest shiniest ring ever!
I couldn't
believe it! I had no idea he was going to be there. It was THE coolest surprise
of my life. I said "YES yes yes YES" after asking what he was doing
home so early and kissing the crap out of his face!!
Extra
Credits
Apparently,
the reason we were out in the cold for so long was because Devin's flight had
been delayed.. Why? Because a cat had peed in the plane on the previous flight.
Does it get any funnier? He was planning to land at 6 and propose at 7,
with a calculated driving time of 30 minutes in between. His flight was delayed
and then scheduled to land at 6:50 pm. He kind of freaked out. He had no
cell phone service on the plane and couldn't get a hold of anyone to tell them
he was going to need more time. He walked to the front of the plane and talked
to the the three mid-twenty year old flight attendants. He told them he was
planning to propose to his girlfriend that night and need to be there
earlier... The three girls freaked out and started brainstorming.....
One of them
talked to the pilot, and he sped the plane up. Apparently Devin said you could
feel the plane pick up speed dramatically. Another flight attendant gave Devin
the WIFI code so he could get a hold of my friends and let them know he would
be a little late. And finally, when the plane landed one of the flight
attendants welcomed everyone to Salt Lake City but told them to stay buckled.
Her friend Devin was going to be late to propose to his girlfriend and he
needed to be the first one off that plane, or so help her. She told everyone to
stay buckled as Devin awkwardly ran to the front of the plane while everyone
clapped and cheered him on. "You go Devin!" "You can make
it!" "Get the girl!"
And he
did.
Wedding Day
- Saturday, April 26th, 2013
We were
married in the Salt Lake Temple with all of our closest friends and family
supporting us.
We had a ring
ceremony at the Hidden Valley Country Club and a beautiful reception as well.
We spent the night in Salt Lake and flew to Miami, Florida the next day.
We spent two
nights in Miami and boarded our cruise ship for the Bahamas!
We visited
Nassau, Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay. It was incredible. I will never forget
it!
We returned
from our cruise ship to Arizona and had an open house that night. We spent a
few more days in AZ and loved every second of it! We finally flew home a little
burnt, a little tired, but more in love than I ever knew was possible.
And that is
our story!
