English Observation

In my class for English Teaching Observation, I have been going to Maple Mountain High School everyday. Today I walked into class and one of the students said

"Good morning my resplendent flapdoodle"
To which I responded, "Uh yeah"

I then looked up the phrase because I literally had no idea what it meant, or if the words even existed. To my surprise they did.

Resplendent: "attractive and impressive through being richly colorful or sumptuous"
Flapdoodle:  "a fool"

I had no idea if this was considered sexual harassment or if he was just trying to show off because we have been learning new words... I'm leaning towards the second. Well played 1st period English class high school boy... well played...

Birthday Pillows

My Mother-in-law's birthday is coming up! Her birthday is Monday, September 23rd.  As Devin and I are poor starving college students, we decided to be a little thrifty with gifts this year.  At first I was disappointed. There is nothing I love more than to give great gifts to great people! But, after some quality ruminating, I decided to make something - pillows for her piano studio chairs!

This is her studio and the two chairs to the left need a little pillow lovin' don't you think?

And here are the amazingly simple pillows I made! Ok, maybe they weren't that easy to make because I hand-stitched them (college girl problems - no sewing machine). But the fact that they are hand sewn makes them that much more lovable right? :)

Click here for the easy video I used make them!

Teacher Teacher Teacher!

Well, I've been going to Maple Mountain High School for one week now! My mentor teacher is Ms. Durrant. I've been able to visit several other classes as well! So far I'm exhausted. I get up at 6:30 and don't finish my homework until 10. I try to fall asleep by 10:30 and do it all over again.

It's exhausting but totally worth it! I feel like I've learned so much so far. It's really gotten my juices flowing on how I want to teach! :) The worst part has been getting sick. I have a cold and can't seem to get over it! One week in a high school and I'm already sniffling! Oh well, what do you do....

Until next time!

Overwhelmed

Wow. So last night I was up until 3 am! Grrr... and then I had to wake up at 7 am for my 8 o'clock class. But all in all, it's been a great day! I seriously love all of my classes, at least so far! I attended my other classes today which were:

Writing Literary Criticism
First off, the teacher started out by saying this class was going to be really really really hard, and we would most likely not get an A. But what really matters is how we progress. Great. The class is all about writing essays, analytical evidence, and that jazz. Sweet, I know what I'll be doing this semester! Pulling my hair out trying to find a valid stance that is original - and by that I mean, a stance that no respected critic, or the thousands of students that have come through BYU, has ever used before. Simple, right...?

Modern American Usage
This class seems interesting. Our teacher came in 10 minutes late. I was wondering who would be the first to leave when he swept in apologizing and saying he was determined to not be late on the first day and then failed.... The class is all about prescriptions. No I don't mean OTC drugs. Prescriptive rules are the laws and mandates that govern our literary and grammatical world. Basically, when it's correct to use the words "to" or "too", "then" and "than" - or how to spell received, or wait is recieved? I'm excited though, because I want to be able to know the knit picky answers that students might ask me about when I'm teaching.

Well, I'm at work right now and I feel like I'm about to pass out! 4 hours of sleep + a full day of work = exhaustion. Oh yeah, Devin wants to go look at a new place to live today. I think we are both sick of our ward and would like to be closer to campus. It's hard to have to drive everywhere when we only have one car! Plus, I think we would have a lot more fun down in good ol' P-town.

We'll see! Wish me luck so that I can stay awake for the next 4 hours! :/

First Day of School

Today was the first day of my Junior year of college. Ah! I LOVE SCHOOL! So far, it has been fantastic! Here's a little rundown of what happened:

7:30 am
I wake up and shower.
Devin is annoyed because he thinks it is 6:30 am, when it's really not.

8:15 am
I wake up grumpy Devin so he can take me to school.
He then realizes its actually 8:15, not 7:15. Nice.

9:00 am
My first class begins! English 276. This class is all about the exploration into teaching. We are going to be assigned different classrooms throughout Utah which we will attend for 6 weeks to get a feel for what teacher's really do. I'm so excited! I also already knew 3 girls in my class. Already a great day.

12:00 pm
Hola, bienvenidos a Espanol! Not gonna lie, I was really scared for this class. I felt that I would be really rusty and not remember anything, but I feel like I actually know what I'm saying! Phew!

1:00 pm
New Testament. This teacher rocks. I can already tell he is down to earth and really wants us to feel the spirit (and get a good grade).  He actually called me by name during class (I was the only one-I'm sure it's not because of my weird name) which totally made my day! Sweet. He knows me now.

2:00 pm
This is when I snarffed down my lunch and began work. It wasn't too bad today! I updated the website and responded to emails. I even had time to finish most of my homework! Talk about maximizing time.

6:00 pm
At 6, I will get off work, head to the bookstore and to my professor's office to grab some books, and then swing by my stylist's place to get my hair cut!

All in all, this has been a fabulous start to an already fabulous year. Oh yeah, did I mention, I love school? And I know. I'm a nerd. But hey, at least I'm a fun nerd, right?
